Aircraft Aluminum 6061 - In addition to aircraft applications, aluminum is also used in spacecraft. Its unique properties are of even more value in this application. Most spacecraft are made of up to 90% aluminum components. The material is also used in making space stations like the Skylab and is expected to make even more appearances in manned space exploration.
Aluminum plays a vital role in the construction of aircraft. Its high resistance to corrosion and good weight to strength to cost ratio makes it the perfect material for aircraft construction. But the one property that makes aluminum the ideal metal for aircraft construction is its resistance to UV damage.
Aircraft Aluminum 6061
I had to wait for my material but once Aircraft Spruce received the material they alerted me that it had shipped. It arrived in perfect condition thanks to very careful packaging. I gave them one star for the time between the order and shipping.

So, what makes 6061 so versatile? Like with any grade, it starts with the makeup of the metal. The major alloying elements of 6061 are magnesium (1.0%) and silicon (0.6%). This makes it highly resistant to corrosion, stress, and cracking.
This also means that the grade features good formability and weldability. This alloy is best known for its high corrosion resistance and finish. It is easy to weld and has almost the same strength as mild steel.
Grade 6061-T6 is often used to make landing mats for aircraft, truck bodies, and frames as well as structural components. It can be fabricated using the most common techniques which is an excellent property. Disclaimer Every effort is made to ensure that technical specifications are accurate.
However, technical specifications included here should be used as a guideline only. All specifications are subject to change without notice. 5052-H32 is a non-heat treatable aluminum alloy and has one of the highest strengths in its class.
Aluminum Sheet
It is not structural but has high fatigue strength compared to other alloys. It also possesses excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine applications. Its excellent workability makes this aluminum sheet ideal for the construction of fuel tanks.
6061 T6 is one of the most common materials in the world. The T6 refers to the temper or degree of hardness, which is achieved by precipitation hardening. This grade has a good strength-to-weight ratio and is also heat-treatable.
With great formability and weldability, it is used for engineering and structural applications, boats, furniture, and more. Cold finished rounds and hexes conform to AMS QQ-A-225/8 and ASTM B211, while extruded rounds, squares and rectangles conform to AMS QQ-A-200/8 and ASTM B211.
When extruded, 6061 square bar is easily cut, welded, and machined for many uses demanding high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. In fact, most extruded round items of this grade are specially ordered to restricted diameter tolerances for ready use in screw machines.

But the strength of aluminum can be increased up to 100 KSI through cold working methods and/or the addition of alloying elements.
This makes it ideal for use in various structural applications. This aluminum sheet has great workability and is one of the most widely used aluminum alloys. It is made from a blend of pure aluminum and manganese.
This sheet is also non-heat treatable but can be deep drawn, welded, spun, or brazed. It's perfect for making cowls in aircraft and baffle plating. The primary role of this aluminum alloy is to strengthen aluminum aircraft structures. The alloy is made from a careful mixture of copper, magnesium, and zinc to give it extra strength. However, because of copper, it is difficult but not impossible to weld.
Once anodized, it has a beautiful finish and has the best machinability. Aluminum bar grade 6061 is the most commonly used and among the most versatile aluminum alloy. Known for its strength, workability, corrosion resistance and ease of joining, aluminum bar grade 6061 is in use across a wide variety of industries and applications.
Its machinability is not as strong as in the 2000 series. Grade 2024-T3 is the most common high-strength aluminum alloy. It is often considered aircraft quality. It has excellent fatigue resistance even though its corrosion resistance is lower than that of 6061. This aluminum alloy sheet is commonly used to make the fuselage, wing skins, aircraft structure, and cowls of most airplanes.
It's also ideal for repairs and restoration because it has a shiny finish. Toll Free: 877-477-7823 Customer Service: 800-861-3192 Fax: 800-329-3020 Aluminum Alloy 6061 is an extremely versatile heat treatable aluminum alloy due to its content of silicon and magnesium.
Alloy 6061 has a wide range of mechanical and corrosion resistance properties as well as having most of the good qualities of aluminum. 6061 is used in many applications from aircraft structures, yacht construction, truck bodies, bicycle frames to screw machine parts.
